Ashtead War Memorials -WWI

Private Richard John Pearson
1st Bn, East Surrey Regiment

Richard Pearson is reported to have been born at Fulham, Middlesex, the son of Richard Pearson, and his marriage to Elizabeth Julia Hamer was indeed registered in that District for December Quarter 1904.

Although residence in Leatherhead cannot be corroborated, in 1918 his wife was living at Clifton, the first villa south of Park Walk, on the eastern side of Rectory Lane, Ashtead. Presumably a rented property, she had not been there in 1915 and disappears from the parish after the Great War.

This soldier seems to have become a Prisoner of War and died in captivity, 2 November 1918 - so close to the Armistice, finally being laid to rest in Hamburg Cemetery, Germany.
