Ashtead War Memorials - Sqn Ldr Michael Venour Primrose Foulis DFC*

The Times May 3, 1945
Obituary: Squadron Leader Michael Venour Primrose Foulis, DFC and Bar, previously reported missing on night operations in the Middle East in April, 1943, now officially presumed killed, was the son of Mrs Clara Foulis of Talbothays, Ashtead, Surrey.

He was born at Hornsey in 1915 and educated at Haileybury. Enlisting in the RAFVR in 1940, he was trained in Canada and commissioned in 1941.

In August, 1942, he was awarded the DFC for gallantry with No. 38 Squadron in the previous June in attacking an Italian naval force from a low altitude in face of heavy opposition. A few weeks later he gained a Bar to the DFC for an attack on an enemy merchant vessel escorted by three destroyers which put up a fierce barrage. Hits were obtained, causing a violent explosion, the ship became enveloped in smoke, and when this cleared only a patch of oil could be seen. Flight Lieutenant Foulis, added the citation, “displayed skill and courage of a high order.”
