What's New?
March 2009
25 Mar 09 The local team and the editor visited St
Lawrences to look at and photograph the WWII plaque and other
realted items in the church and were able to meet the Vicar, Rev
Andrew Mackenzie. WWII information added.
4 Mar 09 WWI W Scarfe - as this name did not match on 03/03/15 on
CWGC, variations were tried on SDGW and Pte W(illiam) SCARFF
produced a match on date ... and was resident in Effingham. That
name also matches on CWGC.
It is noted that a W Scarfe also appears on the War Memorial in St Andrew's, Oxshott.
4 Mar 09 WWI C Taylor - a possible match is
suggested but appears to have no Effingham connection, and there
are inconsistencies on rank and unit.
February 2009
28 Feb 09 WWI Other ranks checked against SDGW
25 Feb 09 AR West who is buried at OLS, is listed on Leatherhead's WM
22 Feb 09 Visit to St Lawrence's (SL) and Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) churchyards to take photographs: all known service war graves completed: reference found to an additional WWII name - Ronald Poland's brother Kenneth, and to a civilian war grave at St Lawrences known to CWGC - Joseph Mathison - but omitted from their listing for St Lawrences. A link added on the OSL page to a biography of Admiral Sir Francis Turner, who is buried there.
21 Feb 09 Barnes Wallis page added - he is buried here, not a war grave but a man forever associated with the weapons of war to create the peace he so fervently desired and who should be better known for the other marvellous things he did.
15 Feb 09 Visit to St Lawrence's churchyard to take photographs; WWI names listed and matched where possible on CWGC database; map links added to this page
