RILEY, JF - his parents lived in Devon but he
is buried in St Giles' churchyard: in CWGC
his rank is Captain, on the memorial it is Major.
26 May 09 Brian Bouchard adds: Having picked up a reference in
the Leatherhead Advertiser, 5/7/1940, to the death of "a
local man, Captain J F Riley - of wounds in Belgium" I
looked for an obit in The Times. On 1/7/1940 one finds
"30/6/1940. As the result of wounds sustained in action in
Belgium, Captain John Francis Riley, R. A., younger son of
Captain G. Riley, R. N. and Mrs Riley, of Ituna,
Ashtead, Surrey, aged 23." His father was Gerard B. Riley
who reached the rank of Acting Commander in WWI. He married
Margery E. Polwhele, registered Hardingstone, Northants., 6/1914.
A first-born son, Paul B., arrived to be registered Brentford
9/1915 and John F.'s birth was reg. Hendon 9/1916. If the latter
was invalided back to Ashtead it would explain burial at St
Giles.
Apparently there was a proposal to move the St Georges War Memorial nearer to the recreation ground, beside the pond, but nothing came of it."
