Where no link is yet provided to a name this
could be because:
- there does not appear to be a record with this surname and
initials in the CWGC database
- or among those with this surname and initials in the CWGC
database there do not appear to be any with a reference to
Ashtead.
Included in the list below are some
infrequently indexed and closely specified names in the CWGC
database for which:
- either there does not appear to be an Ashtead connection or
- there is a possibility that the name on the memorial may not be
quite as shown in the CWGC records
SGDW: Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19 was originally published by His Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO) in 1921. It covered deaths within the period from 4th August 1914 (the declaration of war) to 11th November 1918 (Armistice Day) and, in some but not all cases, up to 25th March 1921. It lists the names of 661,960 Other Ranks.
OD: Officers Died in the Great War 1914-19 was originally published by HMSO in 1919. It covered deaths within the period from 4th August 1914 (the declaration of war) to 11th November 1918 (Armistice Day) and, in some but not all cases, up to 26th September 1919. It lists the names of 41,846 Officers.
BURFITT, H
16 Feb 09 Brian Bouchard: CWGC lists him as Harry
Burfitt. He was in fact Henry Thomas Burfitt.
BUTTON, S
28 Feb 09: Three Pte S Buttons are on SDGW: none appear to relate
to Ashtead (courtesy Ian Whitlock): -
Sidney Charles Pte G/60345 4th Bn Duke of Cambridge's Own
(Middlesex Regt) kia 22/08/18 France & Flanders: formerly
112035 RE b Bromley, Kent: enl Aldershot, Hants: res Capel,
Suffolk
Sidney George Pte G/40890 4th Bn Duke of Cambridge's Own
(Middlesex Regt) kia 23/04/17 France & Flanders: formerly
2398 RFA b Bowes Park, Middx: enl Dover, Kent: res Watford, Herts
Stanley Pte SD/5562 9th Bn Royal Sussex Regt kia 11/06/17 BEF b
Coddenham, Suffolk: enl Ipswich
28 Mar 09: the plaque in St Giles says he was in the Middlesex
Regiment, which leaves us with the first two above.
DICKINS, GC - he is listed as GG Dickins on the St George's memorial (see photo above) but is correctly GC on the plaque at St Giles and on CWGC - Gilbert Collingwood Dickins.
GR FOX - Leading Seaman
GR Fox.
More information has been found about him
which may explain why he is not listed on the CWGC database.
It is hoped that his story will be added shortly.
HILLYER, FR - Frank Reginald Hillier died 06/07/15: 1st East Lancs: Talana Farm cemetery Ypres. SDGW says born and resident Leatherhead, enlisted Kingston on Thames. [via Ian Whitlock, source SDGW: Hillier is one of the 22 names Ian identified as having Leatherhead connections who are not named on war memorials in Leatherhead]
20 Feb 09: Brian Bouchard adds: Frank Hillier may be found in the 1901 Census as a nephew of Edward Taylor living in one of the Model Cottages near to Prince of Wales Beer House, Fairfield, Leatherhead. Then aged 7, he had been born in Leatherhead, seemingly registered Epsom, as Reginald Frank Hillier, September Quarter 1893. He has not been traced as resident in Ashtead.
The East Lancs Regiment which landed at Le
Havre on 22 August 1914. It subsequently fought in the Battles of
Marne, Aisne and 2nd Ypres as part of 11th Brigade, 4th Division.
Buried in Plot II, Rows E and F of Talana Farm Cemetery (CWGC)
are a number of men of the 1st East Lancashire Regiment who died
in a small, but successful attack on 6 July 1915.
Note different spelling of
surname: more information is needed to understand why he is named
on the Ashtead memorial and not Leatherhead's.
REDDICK, S - Sydney's rank was Serjeant, not Sgt as shown on the Ashtead Memorials. It is said that in some units of the British Army there is a tradition that the distinction matters ....
VICKERY, FP - He is shown on the St George's memorial as L Cpt EP Vickery: he is correctly listed as L Cpl FP Vickery on the plaque at St Giles and in CWGC and on the Oxshott Memorial, Frank Percival Vickery
WELLER, GEORGE - Private,
Royal Fusiliers son of late William and Emily Weller, husband of
Ada Ellen Weller. He died aged 30 on 4 Aug 17.
George was claimed by the Weller family (Proceedings, Leatherhead
& District Local History Society, 2004, p217) as the
son of William & Emily of Ashtead, who had emigrated to
Canada. Ancestry.com has the marriage of George Weller and Ada
Hellen Wooster in Toronto, Canada in 1911. [via Ann Williams]
